Are we Poor?

“She’s certainly around a lot.”

“You noticed that too?”

“Yeah … I mean it’s great that she has all this time to play around with us, but …”

“Like what does she do?”

“You know?!”

“Does she even have a job?”

“Precisely!”

“Coz if she doesn’t …”

“If she doesn’t, she won’t be able to feed us.”

“And there can be no greater tragedy!”

“That’s how their world works … They need to go off and be busy most of the time, then get home tired and annoyed at everything. They need misery to be able to buy us food.”

“Imagine we finally get out of the shelter, find our forever home, only to starve to death!”

“That’s probably why they get cats in the first place … so our adorable cuteness can get them out of their slump.”

“What? … You think you’re cute?”

“What did you say?”

“Erm … I said – Cats! Cats are cute!”

“Humph! … But yes, dogs are another story. It’s like coming home to another job! They’re just so happy all the time. Remember Sax? That one used to drive me crazy with his pointless stick routine.”

“He couldn’t even keep himself clean!”

“Disgusting and pointless!”

“There are also hamsters as pets. That’s basically a fluffy rat that can wrinkle its nose.”

“Pathetic! … What if the shelter didn´t check to make sure she had a job? Or worse … what if she lied about having one?”

“She doesn’t look like the lying type. And she has been feeding us.”

“Yeah, you’re right. There’s that. Not a single hungry day.”

“Well … except for when she tried that new wet crap on us! I think it was some healthy kind of nonsense!”

“God, what was that!? Just horrid!”

“Truly I’d rather have died than eaten it. It smelled … cheap!”

“Oh! What if that’s all she could afford … being unemployed and all?”

“No!”

“Who knows?”

“Well I’m not broke … I have no earning responsibilities. Mine is to sit back, look cute and get fed.”

Wanji was getting restless with all the working-from-home that the Covid 19 pandemic had brought with it. It was great hanging out with her two cats, but she couldn’t wait for the day when the world would finally be getting back to normal.
